Forza Horizon 6 Launches May 19: Japan, 550+ Cars, and the Biggest Map Yet

The Horizon franchise heads to Japan on May 19 — and it’s bringing the biggest map in series history.

Playground Games confirmed Forza Horizon 6 launches May 19, 2026 on Xbox Series X|S, PC (Windows and Steam), and Game Pass. Premium Edition buyers get early access starting May 15. A PlayStation 5 version follows later this year.

The setting: a fictionalized Japan with Tokyo as the central hub — five times larger than any previous Horizon city.

What Changed

  • Japan setting confirmed: Open world features Tokyo, mountain passes, coastal roads, and rural countryside — the variety simracers have been asking for
  • 550+ cars at launch: Updated Forza Aero, window livery painting (finally), and body kits for select vehicles
  • Largest map in franchise history: Tokyo alone is 5x bigger than any previous Horizon city area
  • Dynamic seasons return: Weather system reflects seasonal changes with visual and driving surface impact
  • Customizable garages: New feature lets players decorate home garages and showcase their collection
  • Day one Game Pass: Full game available on Xbox Game Pass from launch

Who It Affects

Let’s be clear: Forza Horizon is not a simulator. But it matters to this community for three reasons.

First, it’s a pipeline. A significant percentage of simracers started with arcade racers and graduated to simulators. Every Horizon launch brings millions of new players into car culture — some of them will want more realism within months.

Second, the Japan setting. Touge mountain passes, Tokyo expressways, and rural circuits have been requested across every sim platform for years. Horizon 6 delivers that environment at a scale no simulator currently matches. Expect the “why can’t iRacing/AC have this map” discourse to spike.

Third, it’s content. Streamers, YouTubers, and creators who cover sim racing will cover this launch. If your community overlaps with car culture broadly (and it does), this is the biggest gaming event of May 2026.

What to Watch

Premium Edition access opens May 15. Full launch May 19. Watch for the car list reveal — if Playground includes significant motorsport representation (GT3, prototype, touring cars), the crossover with the sim community will be stronger than any previous Horizon title.

PS5 release date still TBA. PC specs and Steam pre-purchase are live now.
